You could do an entire course on medical ethics in Star Trek, really. Deanna Troi gets impregnated by alien spawn every other episode - she's somewhat like Cordy in that regard, but I don't think they'd get along. And Kira had Keiko's baby transplanted into her mid-gestation to save its life. And then there was the Klingon euthanasia episode, and the whole moral dilemma of bringing up a shapeshifter in DS9 (they require painful stimuli to develop their powers). Not to mention the Holograms are People Too thing, which it is important for tomorrow's med students to know.

QS, thanks for the Jan Steckel recommendation; I hadn't read her. I agree that poem is pretty harrowing :/

Smokey, couldn't I just cut to the chase and show them a montage of "It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim?"

It's good if they weep. You should *make* them weep. Patients probably weep at them all the time and feel embarrassed about it, so it would do them good. You could also follow the Jubal Early line of thought and cut on them a bit.

Acksherly it's a pity you couldn't show them that episode... or "Safe"... or that Buffy one where she thinks she's in a mental institution. Or that DS9 episode where the holodoc is given a virus to teach him compassion for human suffering. I spose they are neither relevant nor subtle, but they'd be fun. You could have popcorn. It's not all jam being a med student, after all.

"Charity after the hurricane" by Jan Steckel (there is a link to it published online from her website) is a wonderful poem. Even as a medic I'm not sure if I'm shocked or stunned by it. Probably both! She is a paediatrician who now writes full time and I enjoy the medical references in her work :)
